INTRODUCTION
Cardamom is a herb grown in tropical climates. Its botanical name is Elettaria Cardamomum and it is grown widely in southern India where it is used as a spice and medicinal herb. The seeds and the oil from the seeds of cardamom are used to treat several ailments. The essence of it is also very popular for use in soaps, creams, perfumes and Indian cuisine.
PROPERTIES
Cardamom usually grown in warm, tropical climates at an altitude of up to two meters from sea level. Many cultures like Indian and Chinese have known to use it for its medicinal properties since ancient times.
Cardamom consists of water, fiber, protein and carbohydrates. It is rich in minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron. Therefore it is not only considered curative but also a healthy addition to regular meals as a spice.
It tastes slightly pungent and has a strong fragrance which is known to cure nausea, vomiting and flautulenza.
PROCUREMENT
As mentioned above cardamom is grown widely in warm tropical climates which have plenty of rain and irrigation. Plant falls under the Zingiberaceae family as determined by botanists. This is a ginger family of flowering plants and has thousands of species spread across Asia, Africa and Latin America.
There are two kinds of plants producing cardamom – Elettaria which produces the green variety and Amonum which produces black variety.
