MCX Natural Gas

INTRODUCTION

Natural Gas (CH4) is a mixture of natural hydrocarbon gases namely methane, propane, ethane and butane. Methane is the most prominent component of natural gas. It is a fossil fuel that gives heat and light upon combustion and is used as a source of energy in various sectors around the world. There are three forms of natural gas –

Pipe Natural Gas (PNG): Gas that may be transported through pipelines.

Natural Gas for Vehicles (NGV): Gas that may be used as fuel for vehicles

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): Gas which liquefied for ease of transportation.

REACTIVITY & PROPERTIES

Natural gas is lighter than air and easily dissipates into the atmosphere because of which it is considered a safe fuel to use. When extracted from the ground it is colorless and odorless. For making PNG an odorant called mercaptan is added for security.

For combustion, natural gas needs oxygen and a source of ignition. It will not burn until brought in the flammable range of 10% gas per volume of air. Also needed is an ignition temperature of about 621 degree Celsius.

PROCUREMENT

Natural gas is mined from under the earth just like petroleum. However, unlike petroleum no refinement or processing of it is needed before consumption. Usually after extraction, it is consumed as found in nature without any transformation.

It may be found in oil fields, called “associated” natural gas. Or it may be found in isolated  fields known as “unassociated". It is also found in coal mines, called “coal bed methane”.

USES

Natural gas has two primary uses –

Fuel – It is used as fuel for combustion in industries, for cooking and for powering vehicles.

Extraction of hydrocarbon gases through gas separation.
