MCX Aluminium

INTRODUCTION

Aluminium (Al) is a metallic element found in the earth’s crust. It is a soft, ductile, non-magnetic metal with silvery-white appearance. It is denoted by atomic number thirteen in the periodic table. After oxygen and silicon, it is the third most abundant element present on earth. Aluminium has a highly chemical reactive nature. Its primary ore is bauxite.

REACTIVITY & PROPERTIES

When exposed to acidic solutions, it reacts with water to form hydrogen. With alkaline solutions aluminium combines to form aluminates. Chlorides including common sodium chloride are known to corrode aluminium . Water is known to oxidize aluminium at temperatures above two hundred and eighty degree Celsius.

Aluminium is known to be lightweight and strong. Among naturally occurring metals, it has the least density of 2.7 g/cm3 – which is less than even steel. It is corrosion resistant due to a process called passivation which forms an oxide layer over the metal surface. It is twice as conductive of electricity as copper. It is also ductile, making it easy to mold and recycle.

PROCUREMENT

Extraction of aluminium from the earth’s crust is done by mining. However the core of the process is the refinement or separation of it from other minerals present in the ore. It is dissolved in a substance called cryolite and then reduced using electrolysis. This is a highly energy intensive process.

USES

Following are the uses of Aluminium–

As it is lightweight, spark and corrosion resistant – it is used widely in manufacturing automobile parts.

Being resistant to corrosion makes aluminium a popular raw material for manufacture of kitchen utensils, window frames and other household items.

Its high conductivity property and ductility makes it ideal for power transmission lines

As aluminium releases neither taste nor odor, its foil is ideal for food and medicine packaging.
